5 Things First Time Homebuyers Should Know

First Time HomebuyerTaking the leap into home-ownership is very exciting! However, everything that is required to get that new home key  can be overwhelming. Here are some things to keep in mind if you’re a first time homebuyer:

Know your goal neighborhood

Get out and drive around. There’s no simpler way to get to know what your commute and neighborhood will be like. I also recommend if you’re thinking of moving farther from your workplace to drive from your neighborhood to your job, and get a sense of how the commute will be on a daily basis.

What are your “must haves”?

Do you want a home with 10 acres? Or a town-home? Do you have to have a pool? Do you need an open floor plan? How many bedrooms and bathrooms would be ideal? By knowing all your “must haves” and communicating these with your real estate agent, you will get the home of your dreams!

Know your budget

Be sure to know how much you can afford on the income you’re making now. Getting ahead of yourself with possible promotions could leave you with a mortgage you can’t afford in 6 months. Getting pre-approved for a mortgage will be beneficial in making sure you know what sort of loan you will be approved for. However, be sure to ask your real estate agent what the taxes and typical utilities are for the home you’re looking at. Many new homeowners don’t take into account the new set of utilities when they plan out how much they can afford on their new home.
