4 Things To Do On A Dallas Day Trip

4 Things To Do On Your Day Trip to DallasSchool is almost here and if you’re like me, you’re probably trying to squeeze in some last minute summer fun! My kids are out of school but we still try to get out and enjoy some summertime fun. Some of our favorite things to do are to make a day trip out of going to Dallas. Dallas is great because not only is it one of the biggest cities in Texas, but it’s also the perfect day trip length for us, just at an hour from Aubrey. Here are some of my favorite things to do on a Dallas Day Trip:

Reunion Tower

One of the best ways to see all of the DFW area is to buy tickets and go to the top of Reunion Tower. If you’ve ever seen the Dallas skyline, Reunion Tower is the building that is round at the top (it looks a little bit like a lolipop to me)! This observation building is located with the Hyatt Regency Dallas in downtown Dallas. Not only does it have phenomenal views of the city, but if you want to make an even bigger trip out of it, there is also two restaurants above the observation deck. The first is a cafe that rotates while you eat so you get different views while you enjoy delicious food, and the second is a Wolfgang Puck restaurant that offers both a rotating view and stationary seating options.

This is a must see while you’re in Dallas. Tickets to go to the observation deck are available for $8 for children, $16 for adults, and $14 for seniors. On their website they have additional ticket options and more info about parking and dining.

Pecan Lodge

I LOVE Texas bbq, and this might be my very favorite I’ve ever had. Pecan Lodge is located in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas, located just east of downtown. Pecan Lodge has won numerous awards for its recipe and there is no doubt why. There is almost always a line wrapped around the building for everyone waiting to this delicious food. Don’t wait too long to get in line for food, because even though they have hours (and are closed on Mondays), if they run out of meat before closing time, they close down. There isn’t more to pull out because they believe in quality bbq that takes a little extra time.

If you stop by, be sure to try their brisket sandwich and try the mac and cheese. Its ridiculously good, and sitting outside (maybe when it’s a little cooler than it is today) is a great way to relax on a Dallas day trip. For more info on their story or the menu check out Pecan Lodge’s website.

Klyde Warren Park

Klyde Warren Park is located above the Woodall Rodgers Freeway and was just finished in 2012. The park spans over 5 acres and is right outside of the downtown area of Dallas. Now a park might not sound super exciting, but this park is unique. Since it is right in the heart of Dallas, the developers really knew what to do to make this a super appealing place for everyone to hang out and visit.

There is a stage area used for special events, a restaurant that has a great view of the downtown skyline, and lots of great lawn space for frisbee or throwing the football around. For the kiddos there are 2 kids playgrounds, and for the kid at heart there is also a game cart to borrow games from. If BBQ isn’t your thing, they also have food trucks to eat at on the weekdays during lunchtime. All of the food trucks are delicious and they also have quite the line, but are definitely worth the wait. To check out what events are going on this week, or parking info visit their website.

Dallas Museum of Art

Once you’re done hanging out at Klyde Warren, you can walk right across the street to the Dallas Museum of Art! This is a fantastic museum with very varied styles of art in their collection. In addition to temporary exhibits, the permanent collection is filled with fantastic European, American, African, and modern art. There is also a great exhibit of decorative art, with fully decorated rooms set up as the time period the art, furniture, and decorations were found in.

The Dallas Museum of Art is closed on Mondays and is open late on the 3rd Friday of every month (except December). And a huge bonus is that the museum is free, with the exception of the temporary exhibits that come through. In August the temporary exhibit that is featured is an Irving Penn exhibit that is put together by the Smithsonian Art Institute. But you need to visit this one quick because it will leave on August 14th. The cost to view the Irving Penn exhibit and the other special exhibits is $16 per person. For more information on the Dallas Museum of Art visit their website.

Dallas is such a fun city, and I love how close it is to Aubrey. It is a great place to visit for a nice day trip. And if you haven’t visited Fort Worth (only an hour west of Dallas), check out what my top picks are to do in Fort Worth.
